Sanibel Island, FL — Shalimar Beach Resort, a cherished Sanibel destination for generations of beachgoers, is thrilled to announce its official reopening on September 28, 2025. The date was chosen with deep meaning—it marks three years since Hurricane Ian’s landfall, symbolizing renewal and the unwavering spirit of the Sanibel community.

A Legacy Rebuilt
Shalimar’s story began in 1959, and since then it has welcomed travelers from around the world with authentic island hospitality. Today, the resort remains a 4th-generation family-owned small business, with owners deeply rooted in the Sanibel community. Their connection to Shalimar is both personal and professional—they were married on its beach—and their commitment to rebuilding was driven by a desire to ensure that their own children, along with future generations of guests, can continue to experience the beauty of Sanibel.
A Message of Resiliency
“Hurricane Ian tested us in every possible way, but it also clarified our purpose,” says Shalimar’s owner, Sean Niesel. “Shalimar’s rebuild isn’t just about what we lost, but what we’ve gained: strength, perspective, and a renewed commitment to hospitality. As Sanibel Island visitors since 1990, we take great pride in being part of the island’s future for generations to come.”
A Community Landmark Returns
Since its founding, Shalimar Beach Resort has been a gathering place for travelers seeking the authentic Sanibel experience. Its reopening represents not only the return of hospitality, but also a meaningful step in the island’s ongoing recovery. Shalimar is excited to welcome back the many repeat guests who have long called it their second home, while inviting new visitors to begin their own family traditions here.
